Water Retention - Edema - Causes, Symptoms and Natural Treatment

Edema, or swelling, is the appearance of the retention of a large amount of fluid in the body.

It usually occurs in two forms: as a generalized form, which involves fluid retention and swelling throughout the body, and another, localized, which occurs in the form of edema, most commonly on the hands and feet.

Edema, or swelling, is the appearance of the retention of a large amount of fluid in the body.

Causes of fluid retention

It is believed that high external temperatures can "slow down" the body and thus affect the retention of water in the body.

Fluid retention is most common in women during the premenstrual period, where the cause is related to hormone imbalance. Due to the influence of hormones, this problem also occurs during pregnancy and disappears after childbirth. Taking oral contraceptive pills in women containing estrogen can cause swelling of the legs, arms, abdomen, and sometimes a feeling of "full body bloating". In menopause, due to a decrease in progesterone secretion, fluid retention and bloating occur in women.

Nutrition with reduced intake of vitamin B1 as well as protein may be a prerequisite for the appearance of edema.

Persons suffering from chronic venous insufficiency, or varicose veins, generally have all symptoms of fluid retention.

Certain medications, including high blood pressure medications, corticosteroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have the ability to retain fluid in the body, so people who use them can suffer from it.

Organic conditions as a prerequisite for edema

Symptoms of fluid retention in the body may be associated with serious conditions such as kidney disease (nephritic syndrome, inflammation of the kidney, lupus), where edema is typically localized to the feet.

Then there is heart failure (heart failure), hypertension, which affects the increased blood pressure and consequently the increase in total fluid in the body. Islands due to heart disease are localizing on the legs and lungs.

Liver cirrhosis is a disease that causes edema.

Chronic changes in the lungs, cause localized edema on the lungs and legs.

Reduced secretion of thyroxin, a thyroid hormone, leads to hypothyroidism associated with the onset of edema.

Swollen, aching joints due to degenerative conditions or old age can also be a trigger for the formation of edema in the area of the elbow, knee, hock, and wrist.

In the event of such serious conditions, the person must comply with medical, prescribed therapy.

Symptoms of fluid retention

The most commonly seen signs of fluid retention are in the form of swelling of the affected parts of the body, most commonly the arms, legs, wrists, daily weight gain, which is not due to obesity, but only due to fluid retention in the body.

Such persons may feel bloated, swollen and the figure on the scale will always show a larger figure. Skin changes can occur in the form of localized edema, which retract on pressure within seconds, which is not normally a skin condition under normal conditions.
